I've been with a number of health clubs all over the country and the Austin Y is the worst. I could type out everything that's wrong with it but it would be the size of the New York City phone book so I'll be succinct and point out my three biggest sticking points: The hours are extremely limited. The staff says there's a policy limiting the amount of time one can use a treadmill or elliptical, but they don't enforce it. And they say there's a policy in regards to cleaning equipment- but they don't enforce it. This place may be OK for people who just work out once a week, but for serious fitness enthusiasts there are much better options in Austin than the Y.

The Austin Y may be good for children but not for individual adults interested in fitness. The Y's hours are extremely limited, especially during the summer, and a lot of members do not seem interested in basic fitness center etiquette. I can't even count the number of times I've seen someone tie up a machine either by placing a towel or water bottle on it while they use another piece of equipment or by doing a few reps then sitting there for several minutes, intending to use it again but not wanting to let someone else have a turn. With treadmills and ellipticals the Y asks people to limit use to 30 minutes at busy times of day but doesn't enforce it. Many people exceed the half hour limit- in fact I know of two people who will use an elliptical for an hour, the default time setting, then hit the reset button and tie it up for another half hour. And very few people will wipe down the equipment after using it. Most of the time I would up having to clean up sweat on a machine because the previous user was too lazy to clean up.
